I write Fantasty. I don't read it.

Tue Dec 2, 2008, 7:50 PM
I always thought that was strange...

I haven't read a single contemporary fantasy novel in... years. The only people I read in the realm of fantasy is Gaiman and McGuire, and they are damn odd fellows, if I do say so myself.

So what do I read? McCarthy (lots of McCarthy), Victor Hugo, Golding, Amy Tan, recently some Conrad and Steinbeck. All of them are realistic or semi-realistic fiction writers.

The truth is... I cannot stand 99% fantasy novels. That's why I am writing one.

Some people really hate my writing. However, I have realized that the people that -do- like it are the people that read in a very similar pattern and genre to my own. The people that are into hardcore fantasy or the books I cannot stomach tend to really hate my stuff!

It doesn't matter to me: I am writing The Poles for myself. (Like I do for nearly all of my art: I don't really consider what you want. XD) Of course, I will lend an ear if you tell me that you cannot stand a word of it, but I won't really change anything. Except grammar. It's my story, for me. And you know what, I like the damn thing! <3

And yes, I have been writing. X3

You're... special?

Tolkien is classical and Gaiman is gaiman. I think you are a crazy reader, dear.
:icondcwilson:
Don't hoist it up at all. It's no fantasmigoria!

Bah. You've known that for a long time, lovey. :P

I love Amy Tan's work, too. This is not fantasy, but try to read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

Fantasy... Hm. Well, there's no elves and stuff running around, but....
I recommend Elantris by Brandon Sanderson and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Have them both. Wanna borrow? I only recommend them because I loved them so much. I have A Thousand Splendid Suns, too. (Read that one in one day - all I did was read, though.)

I know your writing to be good.

I am so very excited to read Khaled Hosseini's stuff! When I beat through my massive reading pile, I will be sure to hit you up for a read. Thank you!
